Third time is the charm
Calvin started soccer 3 weeks ago. It's the same organization Hannah started with so the format is the same. Play soccer games/drills for 40 or so minutes and then do a 3 v. 3 scrimmage for the last 20.
I was pretty excited for Calvin to start. He's been looking forward to starting soccer for some time and always wants to put on the full garb when we just kick the ball in the street. He asked for shinguards for Christmas and changes into his Messi jersey the minute we say we're going to play. Needless to say, he was pretty excited too.
In true Calvin fashion, starting something new wouldn't be the same without tears. I think it's partly because he doesn't understand the coach who has a thick English accent (I don't always understand him either) and because of that, he doesn't always know what he's supposed to do. The coach was talking about kittens one time and it literally sounded like "captain."
At the start of the second week, I didn't think we'd be able to get him on the field as the tears came early. Fortunately we did, because that day he scored 5 goals and he was so proud.
By the third week, we were about 20 minutes in and I was relieved we were in the clear. The third time really is the charm. Until, the tears came again... This sweet boy. Maybe the 4th week will be the charm, maybe not, either way I know he has so much fun out there if he sticks with it.
The first week of soccer, was the day after Calvin's birthday party and Auntie and Uncle Randy were still in town. Calvin was just soaking up the cheers and attention for him, which I think helped keep him in the game.
Meanwhile, two of my other children were wrestling in the grass.
Post-game tunnel. Mike's favorite part of the morning!
Being comfortable on his own does not come natural to Calvin, but he is most definitely a natural when it comes to playing soccer. This is so good for him as we start gearing up for next fall--kindergarten!
Have a great day!
