Costume birthday party

We had Hannah's costume party over the weekend.

She got a new costume right before the party.  My aunt sent some costumes down with my sister and Hannah was excited to be an "Asian princess" complete with red lipstick.  :)

As soon as her friends arrived they decorated masks.

After masks was the costume parade.  I made banners and flags and other things to wave as they walked around the cul-de-sac.  It was pretty festive.  :)

Next up was a cake walk with little toys as prizes (not cake).

The food spread.  You can see the flags I made for the kids to wave.  The décor for this party was super fun because it was just colorful and cheery, totally our Hannah girl.  I did a lot of colorful felted wool balls, fabric strips, and washi tape.  The more texture and color and pattern the better in her opinion, and in mine you could probably say too.

CHECK out her hair.  It is hers!!

After eating, it started to get dark. Quick.

Going along with the colorful theme, I wanted to make a rainbow cake like this.  This rainbow cake was going to be free from the artificial colors that I try my best to stay away from.  In true Lindsay fashion, I was going to wing it day of.  If I had read the entire directions before making the cake I would have noticed a couple of things right away that I would have had to change.  First, it was meant for a 5.5" cake pan which is small and I don't have.  Second, the cake was a cooking light or something like that kind of recipe and called for a 1/4 cup of butter to more than 3 cups of flour.  I'm sorry, but if I'm going to eat cake, I want it to be good, so that was not going to suffice.  I just put way more butter in than it called for and continued on with the recipe mostly.

Unfortunately (or fortunately), the first layer of cake that was supposed to be red from pomegranate juice (we have A LOT of pomegranates!), was purple and came out of the pan like this.  Well, it didn't really come out of the pan so when I tried to take it out of the pan this happened.  So that's how the rainbow cake turned into cupcakes and if you look closely you can see swirled layers of green (spinach juice), orange/yellow (carrot juice), blue (blueberry juice), and purple (pomegranate juice).

They were still yummy and you couldn't even see the rainbow colors in the dark anyway.  :)  (Is that ironic or not, Cort?!?!  lol.)

We moved present opening inside.

Ava was hamming it up and kissing her cupcake and then her daddy.  She absolutely adores him.  Aaaaand food.

And of course we just loved having Russell Wilson make an appearance at the party.

I do believe that eyes glazed over after the party were a great indication that she had a wonderful time.

And that is a wrap on 2014 kid's birthday parties for me.  I love having parties for my kids, their excitement is contagious, seeing them get loved on is good for my soul, and I assume they won't want birthday parties forever, but I have a 4 month break and I am certainly looking forward to it.

Have a great day!
