Arm Check-up
Hannah had a check-up on her arm yesterday. We were supposed to have gotten it checked out two months post-cast removal, but the move, new insurance, the holidays, transferring records, etc. got in the way. Four months later, here we are and she is doing great. The doctor was very happy with how it has healed and her range of motion. He basically felt her arm for a minute and said that it was time to take the pin out. Not sure if you remember what happened, but she had a full break of her ulna which caused the tip of the radius to dislocate at her elbow. She had emergency surgery to clean out the wound that was caused from the bone poking through and a pin placed so her bone could heal. Did I ever show this?
It's called a monteggia fracture, if you want to look it up.
Anyway, the trauma of that evening has not completely passed. The memory of seeing blood on her arm is still fresh. Poor Mike was home alone and I was 1.5 weeks out from my due date. It was kind of a crazy time. However, God is good and has healed Hannah. She had some boundaries put in place after that cast came off. No cartwheels, no push-ups, and no hanging (monkey bars, rings, etc.). If you know Hannah, she was devastated, especially over the last one. However, she put in her time and took care of her arm. Today, she got the okay from the doctor to resume all activity. She was itching to get to the playground! The moment the boys got up from their naps we went.
She was like a kid in the candy store. Everything that she could hang on, she ran to. Bright-eyed, full of excitement, and squeals the entire time. I forgot how much she loved to hang. I was really impressed that she had the self-control to not do it for 7 months.
I wasn't sure if she would have the strength to do all of the monkey bars, but of course she did. Many times over too.
Pure joy.
The story does not end here, unfortunately. The pin that they put in, must come out. More surgery. Boo. She will have another surgery to take it out, two weeks with a sling, and then two more weeks before hanging again. Makes my heart sad (she's my baby!), but she is resilient. She always has been and I'm confident she can handle 4 more weeks.

Hoooooooray! I was surprised at her self control as well. I forgot to tell you that while we were down there for Thanksgiving and went to her school's playground with the kids, we were playing "Follow the Leader" or something. I started to go across the monkey bars and she said, "Uhh... I can't go on the monkey bars." Whoops!
ReplyDeleteI know, I would forget too!
DeleteThis is such a sweet post, we are happy to hear that Hannah has healed so well and that she's almost at the end of this journey! Good luck with the next surgery, will say a few prayers. Big hug!
ReplyDeleteRemember when it first happened and we went to your house? Seems like ages ago. I am so glad we are almost done with this too!
