Earth Day | Our Spring Garden
If social media has yet to inform you, today is Earth Day. We are not the Earth Day celebrating type per say, but we were reminded that it was coming up the other night. Right in the middle of dinner, Hannah left the table and started turning all of the lights off in the house. Then we got a mini-lecture telling us how wasteful we were. After some discussion, and making her turn some of the lights back on, we gave her the great responsibility of making sure her own bedroom light was off when not in use. And we'd worry about the rest of the house.
In honor of being green, I'll show you a snippet of our spring vegetable garden. The orchard around us looks a lot like last year's.
We harvested a first round of spinach this past weekend.
This is our spinach we planted from seed. If you look closely, you'll notice there are a number of other plants that have also sprouted. Namely pumpkins and tomatoes.
If you look even closer you can see that there are egg shells and other debris in the dirt. Mike emptied our home compost out into our garden beds and we believe that's the source of the extra sprouting.
And about a month or so ago, our satsuma tree (and a bunch of others) was buzzing with bees, extremely fragrant, and making my eyes incredibly itchy. BUT, I was so very excited because all of those blossoms means our satsuma tree is going to be FULL come this October. Last year we only got 1/4 of the harvest we did the first year, not sure why, but this is one of my most favorite of all of our fruit trees.
Lastly, these are our nasturtiums today. They have quadrupled and doubled and multiplied from last year and I love it when plants do that!!! I also love how full and lush nasturtiums make gardens look. I wish these were along our entire yard and fence.
I took one pic and then I got carried away. Then I started getting ideas in my head for something crafty. That happens a lot.
I also sound like I have a green thumb some times, but I DO NOT. I just googled "lily pad like leaves with orange flowers" because I couldn't remember the name of these.
I certainly hope to have a green thumb some day. I absolutely love flower gardens and vegetable gardens and house plants, oh my! In the mean time, I will get excited when something returns from the previous year and/or I don't kill it.
Happy Earth Day!
