How to

Hannah has been working on a "how to" book.

You can learn karate moves.

You can also learn to dance in 4 steps.  1-2-3-4 Done!  (above is her name in cursive)

This was the original "how to" that inspired her to create a whole book.  She was teaching Auntie Rachel her karate moves and dancing, and this was their choreography piece.  I wish I would have gotten it on video.

I have my own "how to" today.

Actually it's a "how NOT to".

How not to cook garbanzo beans for the hummus you wanted for lunch:

1.  Soak your beans overnight.

2. Put them in a pot and cover with water.  Turn on stove to lowest possible setting.

3.  Go to Trader Joe's.  (This picture is from last year, but could have been yesterday or today or every time we go to Trader Joe's.)  While at Trader Joe's, walk by the hummus knowing you have beans at home to make your own.  Stop for a second while you realize you never turned off the burner!!!!!!!!

4.  Race home.

5.  Run in the house.

6.  Find your pot of beans burned.  Smoked.  Blackened.  Charred.

7.  Scrub pot with a lot of baking soda and a lot of elbow grease.  (Surprisingly, it all came off.  As I was scrubbing this pan, I thought "I might as well blog about this.")

8.  Admire your beans and then throw them in the garbage outside because they stink!

9.  Lastly, open every window and door and turn on every fan because your house will smell like smoke!  (Probably for days...)  Your clothes and hair will smell too.

I can't believe I did that and I can't believe it has never happened before.  I cook beans all of the time!!  At least it wasn't dinner, those beans are cooking now, and I am not leaving the house.

  1. LOVE the how-to. I'm going to try to learn that dance.

Forgot to tell you that I finally made dried beans myself! I did black beans. I used my best friend, the crockpot! I'm telling you, that thing is a life changer!

    1. I think I need to dust off the ole crockpot after this mishap. :)

      Ohmagosh...Hannah's dancing was super cute!

  2. At least you didn't ruin your pot! Vera did something similar and by the time she got back home (she was gone for like 6 hours or something crazy) the bottom of the pot was completely gone. House smelled so bad for weeks they even had to repaint to try to get rid of the smell.

    1. Wow! Totally trumps mine. It still smells like smoke, but I did a wipe down of the kitchen floor to ceiling, cabinets included and hopefully that helps.
