First week of school
Well friends, week one of school is in the books. Having two gone feels like I've lost two of my buddies and I do miss them. But grocery shopping and other errands is so much simpler with two!
Last weekend before school started Mike and I took each of them out on a little date to chat about the upcoming year.
I took Calvin and asked him how he was feeling about kindergarten and starting school, etc. First of all, our kids LOVE going out on little dates. They become little chatterboxes and brighten up about everything. I am reminded again how much I like each one of them individually, rather than always clumping them together as a whole.
Basically, I decided we needed to do this more often not just for them, but for us too. My little date was good for my soul too! After the date, I felt confident that Calvin was ready for school. Of course, in the back of my mind I knew his excitement might be for the first day or first week. I hope the enthusiasm doesn't wear off anytime soon!
I went to Calvin's back to school night yesterday and peeked in on what he's been doing in class. These self-portraits had me cracking up. Calvin's cute little stick fingers were hanging next to some girl's intricately drawn self-portraits with eyelashes and such. I just love seeing their art!
He's been telling me he's doing good, but probe a bit more and he tells more of the truth.
My sweet boy has been sad. How sweet/sad is this? I was kinda laughing when I first saw this (okay, I was laughing quite a bit because it's just spot on Calvin), but I didn't know the back story and now it's so sad. His teacher told me that when she asked him about his feeling to write down he said sad and then burst into tears in front of the whole class. He cried, "I want Mama. I want Mama." Broke my heart! And today the other kindergarten teacher came to tell me that he was crying today at recess and she was walking around with him trying to help him. Hannah had come over to say hi to him, but she was shooed away by a yard duty person and that made Calvin cry. Poor guy!
The good news is that there has been a lot less crying than I thought there was going to be so far and Hannah feels the responsibility and takes care of him. The bad news is that we have 175 more days of school left this year. haha.
After school gets out it is like a big reunion, Joel included. They are all so happy to be able to play with each other again!
They also talk to their neighbor friend over the fence who is also in kindergarten at their school. It's really cute to listen to what they talk about and listen to them schedule the next time they are going to talk.
The first week has gone about as good as can be expected. Tired kids, some crankiness, and a few tears. We are not quite settled into the routine and in the clear with tears yet, but hopefully we are on our way!
Have a great weekend!
That feelings chart is too much. Glad he's getting in the school groove though.
