MLKJ

When I was a nanny, right before we started having kids, I nannied this little girl named Piper who was very sweet, but also a fireball.  Looking back, I do believe that God had me nanny this girl in preparation for motherhood that was soon to come.  She was hardly two years old when I nannied her and had been talking in complete sentences since she was 18 months.

Anyway, I bring her up because she had a red shirt with a silk screened face of Martin Luther King that she wore.  I asked her who was on her shirt and she replied in her sweet two year old voice, "Docta King!"  She knew I would be impressed by her knowing that, and she was very proud to impress me.  It was one of those moments that I will not forget.  At that moment, I thought to myself, I am going to start teaching my children about these important people in our history when they are so young too!  I can definitely say that I am failing in that department.  As Martin Luther King Day approached this year, this memory was brought to mind.  I wanted to make shirts similar to Piper's for my kids.  I'd also print his face on canvas bags and make prints and sell them in my shop.  Well, as Martin Luther King Day has passed and now we are about to embark on Black History month, I figured it is not too late to share my intentions.

After living in a predominantly black neighborhood my whole life and moving to a completely different neighborhood, I feel like I have more opinions than I used to.  Probably because it is not normal life anymore.  However, I have much less eloquence to share about Martin Luther King than others, so I thought I'd share a blog post from one of my favorite bloggers who nailed a lot of my thoughts on the head regarding this.  I'm pretty sure she does not know who I am, but I used to attend a bible study with her in Seattle and she has a very popular food blog.  Everything I have made of hers I have loved.  More importantly, she has insightful thoughts on living life, and it is just one of those blogs that is good, good, good for your soul.  Add it to your blog reader!

Read her MLK blog and the article that is shared in it.  SO good.

Some food of hers that have become family faves:
Cinnamon pull-aparts (We buy the big tub of cottage cheese at Costco because there is no carrageenan in it and when I *need* to use the rest of it up, I make these.  So, we basically have them often!)
Chicken Tikka Masala (I've done this using whole coconut milk instead of cream and still very yummy!)
Apple Vanilla Slab Pie (ALL TIME favorite (minus the icing)!!  I blogged about my version of this, a Rustic Apple Tart.)
